15-06-2023

The head of the Border Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs - Nikoloz Sharadze met with the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic of Greece - Maria Theodorou.

At the meeting, the parties signed an international inter-agency agreement regarding the deployment of the officers of the Coast Guard Department of the Georgian Border Police on the ships of the Hellenic Navy during the participation in the NATO maritime security operation "Sea Guard", aiming to regulate the bilateral obligations on while boarding, deployment as well as duties and responsibilities of the tactical unit of the Coast Guard Department of the Border Police on the ships of the Hellenic Navy within the framework of the NATO Maritime Operation “Sea Guard” (OSG).

Greece was the first state that was ready to place a tactical unit of the Coast Guard of the Georgian Border Police on the ships of its own navy within the framework of the NATO operation.

In May 2022, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization recognized Georgia as an operational partner of the “Sea Guard” (OSG) naval operation.

Based on the mentioned decision, Georgia became authorized to make its own contribution to the NATO operation and support the alliance in terms of maritime security.
